A dinosaur sunsuit!

My little boy is going to be here really soon – only 11 more weeks.  And it’s time to finally start making a few things for him.  I bought three beautiful patterns while visiting my mother over the holidays and decided to test out the sunsuit pattern.  I’m envisioning a little boy with chunky thighs wearing this sunsuit during July.

The pattern is #132 Sunsuit/Sundress of Creations by Michie.

I originally bought the pattern because it allows for a smocked panel… but as I haven’t quite mastered smocking yet, I thought that I would make this as an appliquéd version instead. Perhaps I’ll get a smocked panel completed by March…I didn’t realize how long it would take!

The jumper is a six-month size and is made from a blue cotton pincord and a cotton dinosaur print (Oh boy! by David Walker).  I love the green pom pom cording- I figure that I can only use things like this when my little boy is young.

I freehanded the dinosaur shapes and then appliquéd them onto the front bodice using double-sided interfacing. Additional details, such as the eyes, nose, cheeks and feet of the dinosaurs were embroidered by hand.

All in all the pattern was very simple to follow.  The only adjustment I made was to interface the area where the snaps are attached- I thought that with all of the upcoming diaper changes, it could stand a bit more reinforcement.

This pattern went together so quickly that I think I’ll make another version (perhaps a 3 month size) with gingham.

For now, this little jumper is hanging in the closet of the nursery.  I can’t wait for him to arrive!
